The Importance Of Vitamins For Low Vision Conditions
Vitamins and nutrition are important for eye health, and specific food and supplements can be beneficial for patients with Age-Related Macular Degeneration. The two options to consider are the Ocuvite vitamins for Macular Degeneration and the PreserVision eye vitamins.
Clinical Trials and Positive Results
AREDS (Age-Related Eye Disease Study) is a specific clinical trial sponsored by the National Eye Institute. This clinical study found that treating individuals with a high risk of developing Macular degeneration with vitamin supplements showed very favorable results. This high-dose supplement was a combination of Vitamin C, Beta-carotene, Vitamin E, and zinc. This combination of Macular Degeneration vitamin supplements lowed the risk of developing the advanced stages of the disease by 25% in the high-risk group. For those in the high-risk group with intermediate to advanced Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) in one eye only, the risk of vision loss was reduced by about 19%. Individuals with no signs of early AMD signs experienced no change or benefit to taking the supplement.
Options to Consider
Ocuvite PreserVision AREDS 2 is a recommended option for patients with early to advanced AMD. PreserVision AREDS 2 uses a combination of Lutein and Zeaxanthin in place of the beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is readily available in foods and is not recommended for use by smokers.
It includes supplements of Lutein, Zeaxanthin, and Omega -3 fatty acids. Based on the AREDS 2 study, these nutrients were determined to be of significant importance in macular health as individuals age.
